Dover island closure!

Postby seanT » Thu Apr 01, 2010 6:50 am

I was contacted yesterday at the gym by the Ministry of Natural Resources to help inform climbers and users of Dover island that a small colony of puffins has taken nest there. This is extremely rare and they will be setting up a monitoring station to observe the nesting habits of the birds. The closure will be effective imediatly and run till end of Sept. This is a huge loss to us as climbers and we will try to plead our case to a MInistry rep at the CNS AGM at Ground Zero later in April. BE there to have your voice heard!!!!

Via the Climb Nova Scotia email this morning:

FROM THE OFFICE OF THE NS MINISTER OF NATURAL RESOURCES
Department of Natural Resources
3rd Floor, Founders Square
1701 Hollis Street
P.O. Box 698
Halifax, Nova Scotia
B3J 2T9

Dear Sirs,

It has come to the attention of the Minister that certain members of your organization have taken to a practice of bouldering birds at a great number of areas on Taylor Island at West Dover, NS. While there is no explicit legislation against the crushing of Common Gulls (Larus canus) beneath boulders, the Minister does find this practice to be morally repugnant and without a sporting character.

Furthermore, in light of the rare migratory occurrence of an Atlantic Puffin (Fratercula arctica) colony settling at Taylor Island, the Minister will be closing Taylor Island to all bird bouldering activities until such time as the birds have set on their way. Please inform your membership that, should they wish to crush birds beneath boulders, they will not be permitted to do so on Taylor Island under penalty of Crown prosecution.

Sincerely,

Howard W. Goldthwait
Secretary to Honorable John MacDonell

At the risk of interjecting an unwanted NB opinion...

I cannot help but think that the meaning of 'bouldering' has been lost in translation. I think someone from CNS could do a lot of good by meeting briefly with a top-level manager from MNR's wildlife department (or Minister MacDonell himself). I'd be surprised if a quick meet-and-greet wouldn't clear things up and get this decision reversed.

Just my experience from working at headquarters for Natural Resources NB.

Great joke guys.
