Saw this on the FQME web site, I think its a pretty good idea that we could use! just like the ice report, but for bugs!

Bonne idée!

blackflies were bad but tolerable last Saturday They were absolutely untolerable while belaying on Sunday. (in CL)

Multipitch would be a good option to avoid them.

Hopefully hot weather comes in soon to get rid of them.

Kingston crag, June 8
Arrived around noon, hot sunny day. Hardly saw a blackfly or mosquito until about 3pm.
Once the temps started dropping the blackflies came out. They were tolerable but increased quickly.
We left sometime around 5 and they were chewing on us pretty good by then. Still tolerable but a noticeable presence.

Wednesday June 8, black-flies/mosquitoes were hideous after 1830. I'm sure things were better during the hotter part of the day.

I think you need to actually create an index in order for this thread to be effective. Good idea but for now I think it's all just personal tolerance limits.

Bites/square inch/hour Otherwise... I find them not that bad this year if that's useful to you?

Not bad where? and when?

I was climbing all day Sunday in Cochrane Lane and I got over 70 bites from blackflies. I stopped counting after 50 on my legs when I got home. Arrived at the cliff around 11 and left around 5. I climbed at Joes, Attic and Pyramid. I was applying deet on myself after every climb and had long pants on.

Even my dog was badly bitten. Others that were at the crag were experiencing the same thing, if not worst hehe Cory  .

Unless it's windy I would stay away from Welsford until it gets hot. As you have said, this is personal tolerance, but I think I have a pretty good tolerance.(I planted trees in swamps north of Timmins in Ontario) 70 bites in 6 hours is beyond a reasonable person's tolerance.
I hope I'm wrong for this weekend, if you do end up going to CL, don't forget to make a bug report.
Good luck!

Gondola Pt. June 10: No wind.
No insects to be seen until entire cliff is in full shade (5:30), then not many. But those blackflies that were out were very quick and aggressive maybe a dozen bites in the next hour, even while climbing. A few mosquitos too, but not a concern.

The bugs to be concerned with there don't buzz around. They crawl up your pant leg and attach themselves in unsavory areas

Rest assured they are there. My parents live about 2 blocks away from there and I pull ticks off my poor dog every time I'm in that neighborhood between May and August.

Check yourself over when you get home.

Last Sunday, June 19th, Cochrane lane was bug free for the entire day despite cool temps. I noticed a few once the evening hit.

How is the bugs/mosquitos situation around Welsford? (from 1 to 10 where 10 is infernal and 0 is no insects)

Thanks!

I was out in St-Andrews last weekend and I would say 1.

So Welsford should be similar but others who have been out recently can probably confirm.

I want to go to hell... there's probably lots of rock to climb there.

P.S. Grand theft project looks like a choss pile from the bottom but is an awesome route! I have to come back to get it clean.
